Greenland has reported progress in negotiations with the U.S., but rules out selling the island

On Monday, the Greenlandic government announced that some progress had been made in negotiations with the United States regarding the island’s future. At the same time, officials in Copenhagen and Nuuk emphasized that Greenland is not for sale and remains a matter for the self-governing territory to decide.

This was reported by Reuters.

U.S. Special Envoy Jeff Landry, appointed by Trump last year to promote the idea of American control over Greenland, arrived in Nuuk on Sunday and met on Monday with Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Foreign Minister Mute Egede.

“We believe there is progress, and on the Greenlandic side, we are focused on finding a solution that will be beneficial for all of us, and most importantly, that there are no threats of annexation, seizure, or purchase of Greenland,” Nielsen told reporters after meeting with Landry.

Landry made no immediate statement, though on Sunday he told local media that he had come to “listen and learn.”

"They asked for a meeting, and we explained our situation and position, as well as the fact that we have certain red lines—we will not sell Greenland, we will own Greenland forever," Egede said.

Trump’s statement that the U.S. should acquire or control Greenland has caused tension between Washington and Copenhagen, as well as more broadly across Europe.

In an effort to ease tensions, Greenland, Denmark, and the U.S. agreed earlier this year to hold high-level diplomatic talks to resolve the crisis, although the results of those talks have not yet been made public.

Greenland and the U.S. are discussingnew American bases on the island.

In closed-door talks, Trump sought nearly complete control over Greenland.
