Greek opposition criticizes PM Mitsotakis’ meeting with Netanyahu — Anadolu Agency

Greek opposition parties criticized Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York, United States. The MeRA25 party called the politicians’ joint photographs a disgrace for the country, Anadolu Agency reports.

MeRA25’s position

MeRA25, founded by former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, stated that Mitsotakis is helping restore Netanyahu’s image. The party also rejected the government’s arguments for closer ties with Israel, including references to strategic cooperation, defense systems and energy agreements.

MeRA25 claims that such explanations conceal a policy that supports Israel’s actions in Gaza. The party called for the immediate termination of all military and diplomatic arrangements which, it says, support actions in Gaza and Lebanon that it described as a massacre.

MeRA25 also stated that Greece’s participation in Israeli and American plans in the Eastern Mediterranean makes the country part of the problem rather than strengthening its security. The party also criticized Mitsotakis’ meeting with Netanyahu because the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for the Israeli prime minister in connection with alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

New Left criticism

Gabriel Sakellaridis, secretary of the Central Committee of the Greek New Left party, also condemned the meeting in a Facebook post. He stated that he sees no greater disgrace for Greece than Mitsotakis’ meeting with Netanyahu in New York.

Sakellaridis accused the government of tying Greece more closely to Israeli military plans in the Eastern Mediterranean. He called for an independent foreign policy, an end to military cooperation with Israel and practical solidarity with Palestinians.
