Japan scrambled fighter jets for four consecutive days in response to Chinese reconnaissance aircraft
The Japan Self-Defense Forces Air Force scrambled fighter jets for four consecutive days in response to flights by Chinese reconnaissance aircraft near the southwestern islands in the East China Sea.
According to a statement by the Joint Staff of the Japanese Ministry of Defense, Y-9 aircraft were detected daily from Thursday through Sunday near the Danjo Islands, which are located west of the island of Kyushu.
The Chinese aircraft approached from the direction of mainland China but did not violate Japan’s national border or airspace. In fiscal year 2025, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force scrambled fighter jets 595 times; of these, about 60 percent—specifically 366 incidents—were in response to the appearance of Chinese military aircraft.

Japan is attempting to respond not only to individual military actions by Russia, China, or North Korea, but also to the overall intensification of their coordination. Tokyo believes that further rapprochement between these countries could have security implications far beyond the Indo-Pacific region. This is stated in a government report by the Japanese Ministry of Defense.
Japan successfully conducted its first test launch of a Tomahawk cruise missile from its destroyer JS Chokai, which is equipped with the Aegis combat system. The test took place in the United States.
