Japan is establishing a National Intelligence Agency
The Japanese Parliament has passed a law establishing the National Intelligence Agency, which is expected to significantly strengthen the country's intelligence capabilities.
This was reported by NHK.
The new agency will have the authority to comprehensively collect and analyze information provided by ministries and government agencies. A National Intelligence Council will also be established under the Cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister, and will include key government officials, such as the Secretary-General of the Cabinet and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The Japanese government plans to launch the new bureau as early as this summer. At the same time, critics of the law warn of potential risks to citizens’ privacy, the protection of personal data, and insufficient democratic oversight of the new agency’s activities.
