Imran Khan was returned to prison after a medical examination

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was returned to Adiala Prison after undergoing a medical examination at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. A representative of his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), reported this, according to NDTV World. Pakistani media reported that doctors determined it was safe for him to remain in custody.

Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attullah Tarar, wrote on X that Khan was examined by a team of qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist, and a general practitioner. According to him, the doctors determined that the 73-year-old politician is fit to remain in custody. After the examination, he was transported back to prison, where he is currently in his cell.

Khan was taken to the hospital around midnight following a Supreme Court ruling that ordered the Islamabad authorities to provide him with specialized medical care due to concerns about his health. According to Geo News, the politician’s transport to and from the medical facility took place under heightened security measures. During his brief stay at the hospital, dozens of PTI supporters gathered outside the facility, AFP reported.

Imran Khan has been in custody since August 2023. He claims that the cases against him are politically motivated, while the government denies this. The former prime minister’s lawyers claim that his health has deteriorated in prison and that he has suffered significant vision loss in his right eye.

In its ruling issued on Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered that Khan be transferred to Shifa International within 48 hours and granted him access to a medical team that was to include his personal physician. Shehbaz Sharif’s government initially stated its willingness to comply with the ruling but later filed a motion with the court to have it reviewed and overturned. The authorities claimed that medical reports had not identified a condition requiring urgent treatment.
