Hong Kong consumer price index rose 1.7% in August — ECNS
In Hong Kong, China, the composite consumer price index rose by 1.7% year-on-year in August 2026. The growth rate remained the same as in July, ECNS reported, citing Hong Kong's Census and Statistics Department.
Underlying inflation unchanged
Underlying inflation, calculated excluding one-off government relief measures, stood at 1.9% year-on-year. This figure also remained unchanged compared with July.
Utilities saw the sharpest increase
The highest price growth was recorded in the electricity, gas and water category, at 11.5%. The cost of miscellaneous services increased by 4.7%, transport by 3.9%, and miscellaneous goods by 2.5%.

Prices for meals bought away from home and take-away food rose by 1.1%, durable goods by 0.8%, and housing by 0.1%. Meanwhile, basic foodstuffs became 0.2% cheaper.
A spokesperson for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government said inflation would continue to face upward pressure due to high international oil prices, which affect fuel-related items. According to the spokesperson, price pressures in other major components of the index generally remained contained, so overall inflation stayed at a moderate level.
