In Ghana, Ghana EXIM Bank CEO Mensah warns of threat to the Ga language — MyJoyOnline

In La, Ghana, Ghana EXIM Bank Chief Executive Officer Sylvester Adinem Mensah said that the Ga language is facing growing pressure: some children hesitate to speak it, while others cannot communicate in it at all. He said this during celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Latenu Radio, MyJoyOnline reports.

Passing the language on to children

Mensah noted that Accra's cosmopolitan character reinforces the need to pass the Ga language on to younger generations in families and public institutions. According to him, many children understand the language but hesitate to speak it, while some cannot communicate in it.

The head of Ghana EXIM Bank, who previously served as a member of parliament for La-Dadekotopon, called the language an important component of the people's knowledge, identity and sense of belonging. He stressed that a people who lose their language gradually lose their memory as well.

The role of the radio station

Mensah praised the work of Latenu Radio, which has used the Ga language in news, music and discussions for ten years. He called on the radio station to continue this work and create programs for people who have lost the ability to speak Ga and wish to learn it or reconnect with it.

During the station's anniversary ceremony, awards were also presented to people recognized for their contributions to the communities of La and the broader traditional Ga area.
