India has no plans to stop buying Russian oil because of the war in Ukraine
India continues to purchase Russian oil and other resources because it believes that cutting them off will not stop the war in Ukraine. This was stated by India’s foreign minister.
According to him, the purchase of energy resources from Russia is primarily related to India’s own needs. The country seeks to provide energy to its population, which numbers about 1.4 billion people.
The Indian minister also outlined what steps, in his view, could help bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
“It is important for all of you to understand the challenges involved in providing energy to 1.4 billion people at a time when the situation in the global energy sector is very, very complex,” he said.
Jaishankar noted that Ukraine has its own perspective on this issue, which India respects, but New Delhi has its own and hopes that others will respect it as well.
The Indian foreign minister emphasized that economic restrictions or a boycott of trade with Russia will not be able to end the hostilities.
“But let me just add: this conflict, which has now been going on for five years, will not be resolved simply because someone buys or does not buy oil, alumina, minerals, metals, or fertilizers,” he said.
According to Jaishankar, the war in Ukraine will be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy, and negotiations. He added that this is precisely why India encourages this approach.
