Iraq and Pakistan have reached an agreement with Iran on the safe passage of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz — Reuters

According to Reuters, Iraq and Pakistan have reached separate agreements with Iran regarding the safe passage of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

This was reported by Reuters, citing sources.

According to the sources, Iraq has received Tehran’s approval for the passage of two large tankers carrying a total of about 4 million barrels of crude oil.

Representatives of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil noted that Baghdad is also seeking to expand agreements with Iran, as the country is critically dependent on oil exports, which account for up to 95% of the state budget.

At the same time, Iraqi officials emphasize that any deterioration of the economic situation in Iraq could negatively impact Iran’s own interests in the region.

Separately, it is reported that Pakistan, under a bilateral agreement with Tehran, has received permission for the passage of two tankers carrying Qatari LNG intended for domestic consumption. Previously, the country imported about ten such vessels each month to meet electricity demand during the summer.

Sources also note that neither Iraq nor Pakistan made direct payments to Iran or IRGC entities for transit, and Qatar, although not a party to the agreements, notified the U.S. of the shipment to Pakistan.

Analysts view these arrangements as a sign that Iran continues to influence traffic on a key maritime route through which about 20% of global oil and LNG exports pass, shifting from a complete blockade to selective control of the strait.

The Qatari tanker Al Kharaitiyat, loaded with LNG, became the country’s first vessel to successfully navigate the blocked Strait of Hormuz since the start of the full-scale conflict with Iran.
