Iraq and US agree to resume cash dollar shipments — Anadolu Agency

Iraq and the United States have agreed to resume shipments of cash dollars to the country after a several-month break. A new batch of currency is expected in Baghdad in the coming days, Iraqi government spokesperson Haider al-Abboudi said.

Agreement during visit to the US

According to al-Abboudi, the agreement was reached during Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi's visit to the United States. The shipments are intended to help meet the country's domestic demand for foreign currency.

The spokesperson did not specify either the size of the next batch or the exact date of its arrival. The agreement was reported by Anadolu Agency.

Control over currency circulation

Al-Abboudi said the resumption of shipments was preceded by steps taken by Iraqi authorities to strengthen control over dollar distribution, counter the improper use of foreign currency, and expand electronic payments. According to him, the country is gradually moving toward a more digital economy.

The United States suspended cash dollar shipments in April, including a batch estimated at about $500 million. The agency notes that Iraq's foreign currency reserves are held in an account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, while cash dollars are important to the country's economy, where cash is widely used.
