Antisemitic graffiti investigated in Chicago suburb — Jerusalem Post

In Deerfield, a Chicago suburb in Illinois, unknown individuals painted antisemitic graffiti on the municipal building overnight. The inscriptions were discovered the following morning and promptly removed, while police launched an investigation, The Jerusalem Post reports.

Deerfield officials said they unequivocally condemn all manifestations of antisemitism and expressed solidarity with the Jewish community. They stressed that acts of antisemitic hatred are unacceptable both in Deerfield and anywhere else. Following the incident, police increased monitoring of public buildings and houses of worship.

Swastika on a playground

Less than a week earlier, a similar incident occurred in neighboring Highland Park. Last Tuesday, unidentified individuals drew a swastika on a playground slide at Devonshire Park. Park employees removed the symbol, while local police opened an investigation and increased their presence in parks and near houses of worship.

Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering noted that the incident occurred during a sensitive period for the Jewish community — between the High Holidays and preparations for Sukkot. She issued a statement in five languages, including Hebrew, saying that hatred has no place in Highland Park.

Criticism of New York mayor's strategy

Separately, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) sharply criticized a new strategy to counter antisemitism unveiled by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The organization said that Mamdani does not view hatred toward Jewish residents as an emergency issue and does not recognize the different forms of antisemitism.

According to the ADL, since Mamdani took office, it has documented hundreds of antisemitic incidents in New York City, nearly 40% of which were related to Israel. The organization also called on the city administration to introduce zero tolerance for antisemitism and extremism, protect Jewish institutions, and adopt an official definition of antisemitism.
