Iran allows some Iraqi tankers to pass through Strait of Hormuz — Al Jazeera
Iran has allowed some Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz following repeated requests from Baghdad through various channels. Al Jazeera English reports, citing Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency.
Baghdad’s request
According to IRNA, special permission for Iraqi tankers was one of Baghdad’s main requests during Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf’s visit to Iraq this week.
Iraqi President Nizar Amidi said that in recent days Iran had facilitated the passage of some vessels carrying Iraqi oil. According to him, Baghdad also discussed oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz with Iranian officials.

Statements by Iraq’s president
At the Baghdad Dialogue conference, Amidi said that the Iraqi government would not agree to the use of the country’s territory for attacks against another state. He also stated that attacks on countries in the region from Iraqi territory have no justification.
The president added that everyone seeks to prevent Iraq from being drawn into the ongoing war in the region, the consequences of which, he said, have been severe for the country. Amidi stressed that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz affects the entire world, not only Iraq. Baghdad continues talks with Tehran over what the president called complex issues in the strait.
As Al Jazeera notes, Iraq is among the countries most affected by Iran’s de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping traffic there remains significantly below pre-war levels, while ships in the area continue to come under attack. Before the start of the US and Israeli war against Iran, Iraq produced about 4 million barrels of oil per day. Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said Baghdad was working to expand exports through the Turkish port of Ceyhan and also planned to begin exports through Syria’s Baniyas and Jordan’s Aqaba.
