Iran may strike a favorable deal with Europe regarding the Strait of Hormuz
Iran may, for the first time, allow European countries to participate in clearing mines from the Strait of Hormuz. According to Bloomberg, Tehran is considering such a move as part of potential agreements to restore safe navigation, which could also influence Iran’s negotiations with the U.S.
Iran is considering allowing European countries to participate in the demining of the Strait of Hormuz. Bloomberg learned this from diplomats familiar with the closed-door talks. If an agreement is reached, it would mark a significant shift in Tehran’s position. Previously, Iran had repeatedly stated that it would not allow foreign countries to participate in such operations.
Now, according to the agency’s sources, Iran’s stance has softened. Tehran may agree to European participation if it helps restore safe navigation through one of the world’s most vital maritime arteries. At the same time, no final decision has been made yet. This is merely an option currently being discussed within the framework of diplomatic contacts.
There are several important conditions
European countries’ participation in the mine-clearing operation is possible only if several conditions are met. First, Iran must guarantee the safety of the naval vessels that will participate in the operations. For Tehran, this is a matter of principle, as it does not want to allow a situation where foreign military ships can operate in the strait without clear guarantees.
Second, the ceasefire must remain stable. According to diplomats, without this, it will be difficult to discuss large-scale demining operations. There is also a third problem. The final decision must be supported by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). According to Bloomberg, there is currently no consensus within the IRGC regarding the possible admission of European countries.
Therefore, even if diplomats agree on the format of European participation, the implementation of such a plan may depend on the position of Iranian security forces.
The U.S. and Iran are at odds over control of the strait
At the same time, Tehran and Washington cannot agree on how the Strait of Hormuz should operate in the future. Iran insists on retaining control over this waterway. Furthermore, Tehran wants to charge a fee for its use.
The U.S. opposes this approach. Washington is interested in the free and safe passage of ships through the strait without Iran imposing its own conditions on international shipping. That is why the issue of demining could become part of much broader negotiations.
Why the Strait of Hormuz Is Important
The Strait of Hormuz is of immense importance to global trade and energy. A significant portion of oil and gas supplies from the Persian Gulf countries passes through it.
Any disruptions to shipping in this region can quickly affect global oil and gas prices. Therefore, the safe passage of ships through the strait is important not only for Iran or the United States, but also for many other countries.
If Tehran does indeed agree to allow European countries to participate in mine clearance, this could be one of the first practical steps toward restoring normal shipping. At the same time, no final agreement has been reached yet. Iran has yet to agree to the terms, and there remains domestic opposition to such a decision.
