Iran threatens to destroy critical U.S. infrastructure in response to the strikes

On March 22, 2026, Iranian authorities announced their readiness to launch massive strikes against U.S. targets and the infrastructure of Washington’s allies in the Middle East.

According to CNN, Hatem al-Anbia, a spokesman for the Central Command, emphasized that Tehran would attack energy and communications networks as well as desalination systems if the U.S. carried out Donald Trump’s threats to destroy Iranian power plants. This statement was a direct response to the U.S. president’s ultimatum regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Potential damage to desalination plants poses a critical threat to the entire region, as this resource is extremely scarce for local countries. Iranian leadership emphasizes that not only military but also civilian life-support infrastructure belonging to the U.S. and the “regime in the region” under its control will be targeted. The situation is escalating against the backdrop of previous strikes on energy facilities and the oil blockade maintained by Russia’s allies as part of the “shadow fleet.” Experts note that this exchange of threats is pushing the Middle East to the brink of a massive humanitarian catastrophe.

U.S. President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Tehran, demanding that the Strait of Hormuz be fully opened within 48 hours.

As a reminder, Tehran began allowing commercial vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz only for a separate fee.

In addition, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the start of consultations with key partners on establishing a UN mechanism to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz.

Recall that war in the Middle East threatens global food security, according to Al Jazeera.

Donald Trump stated that after the “demise” of the Iranian regime, control of the Strait of Hormuz should be assumed by American allies. He criticizes Europe for its unwillingness to send ships to escort tankers. The U.S. is prepared to leave patrolling to its allies if Iran falls.
