Iran signs secret €500 million missile deal with Russia to rebuild air defenses

Iran has secretly agreed to purchase 500 'Verba' man-portable air-defense systems from Russia in a €500 million contract aimed at restoring its air defense capabilities. The deal, reportedly signed in December, includes the delivery of the complexes alongside 2,500 missiles over the next three years, marking a significant effort to rebuild Iran’s defenses after US and Israeli strikes in summer 2025.

Leaked documents received by the Financial Times reveal the confidential nature of the contract, offering rare insight into Tehran’s efforts to shore up its air defenses. This cooperation highlights Iran’s determination to counteract previous setbacks and enhance its military readiness.

The agreement is expected to notably strengthen Iran’s air defense network, potentially altering the strategic balance in the region and influencing future US and Israeli responses to Iranian threats.
