The EU has linked the drone explosion at the port of Constanța to the consequences of the war launched by Russia

Top European Union diplomats have expressed their support for Romania following the incident involving a drone explosion in the port of Constanța. Officials in Brussels stated that the incident is a direct consequence of Russia’s war against Ukraine and its impact on security in the Black Sea region.

European Council President António Costa emphasized that this is already the third serious security-related incident to occur in Romania in recent weeks.

“These incidents are a direct consequence of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine. The EU condemns the repeated violations of member states’ airspace and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ensuring the security of all member states,” he wrote on social media.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that the incident occurred a week after a drone crashed into a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați.

“This is a direct consequence of Russia’s war against Ukraine. It is increasingly becoming a direct threat to countries on our eastern border. Our solidarity is with every member state facing these threats. And our response must match the gravity of the situation,” she wrote on social media platform X, adding that Europe is investing significant funds in counter-drone measures, air defense systems, and early warning systems, and that the SAFE program (the EU’s defense credit fund for financing and developing the European defense industry) will help build a stronger Romania.
