Iran has proposed a new plan to the U.S. regarding the Strait of Hormuz, according to Axios

Iran has proposed a new plan to the U.S. regarding the Strait of Hormuz, according to Axios

Iran has presented the United States with a new proposal to resolve the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and end the war. At the same time, Tehran is proposing to postpone nuclear talks until a later date.

This was reported by Axios.

According to the publication, the initiative was conveyed to the American side through Pakistani intermediaries and is primarily aimed at reducing tensions around the strait and the American blockade.

Specifically, the proposal includes the following key steps:

  • the possibility of extending the ceasefire for an extended period or achieving a permanent end to the war;
  • launching nuclear negotiations only after the opening of the Strait of Hormuz or the lifting of the blockade.

As Axios notes, the White House has already received this proposal, but it is currently unknown whether the U.S. is ready to consider it.

“These are delicate diplomatic negotiations, and the U.S. will not negotiate through the press. As the president has said, the United States holds the cards and will only strike a deal if the interests of the American people come first and Iran never obtains nuclear weapons,” said White House Press Secretary Olivia Vales.

The crisis in relations between the U.S. and Iran escalated this weekend after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to Pakistan ended without results.

Earlier, the White House reported that Donald Trump’s representatives—Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner—were scheduled to meet with Araghchi in Islamabad. However, the Iranian side did not provide a clear answer regarding participation in the talks.

Against this backdrop, Donald Trump told Axios that Iran’s stance had forced him to cancel the planned trip.

“I don’t see the point in sending them on an 18-hour flight in the current situation. That’s too long. We can do this over the phone. The Iranians can call us if they want. We’re not going to go there just to sit around,” the U.S. president emphasized.

On Sunday, Abbas Araghchi held separate talks with Omani officials in Muscat, where they discussed the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Afterward, he returned to Islamabad to continue the dialogue.

According to data from the Vesselfinder portal, as well as another similar service, Marinetraffic, the 142-meter superyacht Nord, owned by Alexei Mordashov of the Russian company Severstal, left Dubai on April 24 and is heading to Oman. The vessel crossed the Strait of Hormuz without incident.

As a reminder, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz will remain blocked to Iranian exports until a full-fledged peace agreement is reached.

Ukraine is ready to deploy at least two mine-sweeping ships to the international operation to clear the Strait of Hormuz of mines.

The Times reported that Ukraine could send all four of its minesweepers, which are based in Britain, to the Strait of Hormuz.
