Istat confirms Italy's 2025 deficit at 3.1% of GDP — ANSA English

In Italy, Istat confirmed that the deficit-to-gross domestic product ratio in 2025 stood at 3.1%. The final estimate matched the preliminary figure the agency published in April, ANSA English reports.

EU threshold

The Italian government had expected the final deficit figure to be revised downward to 3% of GDP or lower. This threshold is set by the European Union's fiscal rules.

A reduction of the figure to this level could have allowed Italy to exit the excessive deficit procedure early. However, Istat's final estimate remained at 3.1% of GDP.

Minister's statement

Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said that the government noted with regret Istat's final data on the deficit-to-GDP ratio for 2025.

According to him, Italy will not exit the excessive deficit procedure early this year, as the authorities had hoped. At the same time, Giorgetti said that, in line with the figures already set out in the Economic and Financial Document, DEF, this could happen in 2027.
