Italy prepares ban on face coverings in schools — Dawn
The Italian government is preparing a legislative initiative to ban the wearing of burqas and niqabs in schools and also plans to set a maximum number of foreign students in a single class. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated this at the annual event of the youth wing of her Brothers of Italy party, Dawn reports.
Restrictions for school classes
According to Meloni, the relevant measure will soon be submitted for consideration at a government meeting. It is intended to legally define the maximum number of students with foreign citizenship in a class. The prime minister did not specify what this limit would be.
The initiative also provides that parents of foreign students who have serious difficulties integrating into the school system must learn Italian. Meloni said that one child who does not understand Italian can learn the language more quickly with the help of classmates and teachers. At the same time, a large number of such students or their majority in a class, in her view, is no longer integration.

Ban on covering the face
Meloni said that students must come to school with their faces uncovered. According to her, in Italy, no one can decide that a young woman must hide herself by referring to a real or imagined tradition.
According to the research institution Fondazione ISMU, students who are not Italian citizens account for 11.6% of all those enrolled in Italian schools — nearly 12 out of 100 schoolchildren. The issue of integrating migrants, including those from countries with Muslim majorities, is the subject of political and public debate in Italy.
