Šuica discusses Gaza recovery and security with Saar — Jerusalem Post

In Israel, European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica held talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar on Sunday. They discussed relations between the European Union and Israel, regional stability and the early recovery of the Gaza Strip, the Jerusalem Post reports.

Security and the Palestinian Authority

After the talks, Šuica wrote on social media platform X that the sides discussed EU-Israel relations as well as their shared interest in security and stability in the Middle East. According to her, this also entails a reformed and effective Palestinian Authority.

The European commissioner said she focused on the urgent need to advance Gaza’s early recovery. She added that continued cooperation is key to implementing early recovery projects directly on the ground.

The European Union’s position

In July, the EU, together with like-minded partners, launched an initiative to finance Gaza’s early recovery. It is aimed at restoring basic social and economic services, repairing critical infrastructure and strengthening the governance system.

The European Union has criticized Israel’s actions in the war in Gaza while reaffirming the country’s right to self-defense. The EU has also criticized the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, considering it an obstacle to Israeli-Palestinian peace and the creation of a Palestinian state.

There is no unified position on Israel among the EU’s 27 member states: some countries sharply criticize the country, while others maintain close ties with it.
