Uruguay’s Broad Front backs pro-Palestinian march in Montevideo — Jerusalem Post
Uruguay’s ruling Broad Front coalition unanimously supported a pro-Palestinian march scheduled for October 8 in Montevideo. The coalition’s National Political Committee also called on the government of President Yamandú Orsi to step up international action regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, The Jerusalem Post reports.

The event is being organized by Coordinación por Palestina en Uruguay. It is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. local time in the center of the Uruguayan capital, with participants expected to march to Independence Square. Organizers are promoting the event under the slogan “Free Palestine or barbarism.”
In its resolution, the Broad Front accused the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “genocide” in Gaza and said it was joining international demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians. Israel rejected the genocide accusations and said its military campaign was directed against Hamas after the group’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

Position of the coalition and government
The coalition called for compliance with international law and human rights in the region, separately mentioning the West Bank and Lebanon. It also reiterated its support for the two-state model and called on Uruguayan authorities to continue promoting initiatives for a lasting settlement of the conflict in international forums.
The publication notes that the Broad Front’s wording regarding Israel is harsher than the position of the Orsi government: the coalition uses the word “genocide” in relation to Gaza, while the government has not used that definition. Orsi took office as president in 2025 after winning the election as the Broad Front’s candidate.
In August 2025, Uruguay suspended a cooperation agreement with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, citing Israel’s planned operations in Gaza City. Israel’s Embassy in Uruguay criticized the decision at the time. Uruguay’s Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, officially supports a two-state solution and maintains diplomatic relations with both Israel and the Palestinians.
