Africa World Airlines unveils first Embraer E190 in Ghana — MyJoyOnline
Africa World Airlines unveiled its first Embraer E190 aircraft at Accra’s international airport in Ghana. The aircraft is the first of 10 planes with which the carrier plans to expand its fleet to strengthen air connectivity in Ghana and West Africa, MyJoyOnline reports.
First of 10 aircraft
The new Embraer E190 seats 102 passengers, with 14 premium economy seats and 88 economy seats. AWA Chief Executive Officer Luolin Cui said the aircraft opens a new stage for the company and is expected to support the expansion of its regional operations.
According to Cui, 97% of the airline’s employees are Ghanaian citizens. Since beginning operations in 2012, AWA has carried more than 5 million passengers. The aircraft was unveiled as the carrier marks 14 years of operations and after it resumed the Accra–Abidjan route in July.

Challenges and infrastructure development
World Trade Centre Accra Director Yvonne Botchwey, speaking on behalf of AWA Executive Chairman Togbe Afede XIV, said Ghana’s domestic aviation sector operates under significant costs. Among the factors, she cited dependence on imported resources, foreign-exchange expenses, customs duties, a limited number of passengers, and airport operating hours. According to her, AWA paid its first dividends after 13 years of operation.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe reported on Ghanaian government investments in aviation infrastructure. In particular, a connection between Terminals 2 and 3 at Kotoka International Airport is planned to facilitate transfers between domestic, regional, and international flights. Airport infrastructure is also being developed in Bolgatanga, Wa, and Sunyani, while the runway in Kumasi is being expanded.
Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Abla Dzifa Gomashie said improving air connectivity is important for the development of tourism and cultural exchange in Ghana and West Africa.
