Italy has temporarily reinstated border controls for travelers arriving from Spain in connection with the migration crisis in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. The restrictions will remain in effect for one month.
According to the publication, the Italian Ministry of the Interior has ordered a temporary suspension of certain provisions of the Schengen Agreement regarding Spain and the reinstatement of controls at ports and airports.
It is noted that the checks will be selective and will primarily target third-country nationals. Law enforcement officers will verify that they have all the necessary documents for entry.
According to El Economista, Italian authorities initially considered completely closing the border with Spain but abandoned the idea due to the risk of significant disruptions in the midst of the summer tourist season.
In late July, the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, located in North Africa, faced a massive influx of migrants from Morocco, which exacerbated the migration situation.

As a reminder, Santiago Abascal, leader of the Spanish right-wing populist party Vox, called for the permanent militarization of the border with Morocco and the indefinite closure of the border crossing amid the migration crisis in Ceuta.

On Saturday, Spain began installing a 500-meter-long inflatable floating barrier near the border with Morocco in the Ceuta area. This decision was made following a sharp increase in the number of migrants attempting to enter the Spanish enclave.
