Italy scraps road tax for low- and medium-powered cars and motorcycles
The Italian government has scrapped the road tax for low- and medium-powered cars, as well as motorcycles. The decision was approved by the cabinet, ANSA English reports.
Benefit for one vehicle
According to sources at Palazzo Chigi, the abolition of the vehicle ownership tax, known as bollo auto, will apply to cars that families mainly use for daily travel. The benefit will also apply to motorcycles, but each citizen will be able to use it for only one vehicle.
According to the government's estimates, the decision will cover all motorcycles and more than 70% of cars currently on the country's roads. In total, this amounts to approximately 14.5 million vehicles. The measure is intended to reduce the tax burden associated with owning a car or motorcycle.

Conditions for cars in 2027
Under the government decree, in 2027 the car tax exemption will apply to vehicles with power of up to 80 kW. The benefit will also extend to mopeds if their owner does not already receive such an exemption for a car.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, commenting on the cabinet's decision, said: “Today, the government is abolishing one of the taxes Italians hate the most.”
