Italian law enforcement officials have provided details about the identity and motives of the driver involved in the hit-and-run in Modena

During the investigation into the high-profile incident involving mass injuries in the center of Modena, law enforcement authorities found no evidence of radicalization or the suspect’s involvement with extremist religious organizations. Investigators conducted a forensic analysis of the suspect’s seized digital devices and communication equipment, which completely refuted the theory of his possible ties to jihadist groups.

This was reported by ANSA

The suspect in the case is 31-year-old Salim el-Koudri, who was born in the province of Bergamo but had recently been living in the suburbs of Modena.

Currently, the primary theory being investigated is an exacerbation of serious mental disorders from which the man had previously suffered. Police officers are attempting to obtain official access to his complete medical records to thoroughly examine his medical history and prescribed treatment. Up until this point, the man had an impeccable reputation, had never been charged with a crime, and was not on the police radar. It is known that the suspect successfully completed a degree in economics and was in the process of finding a job, so investigators continue to carefully gather witness statements to definitively determine the causes of this tragedy.

On May 16, in Modena, Italy, a man drove his car into pedestrians in the city center, then got out of the car and attacked people with a knife. At least seven people were injured in the incident.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni decided to urgently change her schedule and visit the city of Modena, where a high-profile emergency involving mass injuries had occurred the day before. To travel to the scene of the tragedy, the prime minister was forced to cancel a previously scheduled official visit to Nicosia, where she was to meet with the President of Cyprus.
