Israel commissions INS Drakon submarine — Jerusalem Post

At the naval base in Haifa, Israel held a ceremony to commission the sixth Israeli submarine, INS Drakon, into the Navy. Israel Defense Forces Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir called its integration one of the key steps in strengthening the army’s capabilities, the Jerusalem Post reports.

Statement on Iran

During the ceremony, Zamir said that Israel is monitoring developments in Iran and the actions of groups affiliated with it. According to him, the Iranian regime has “suffered and been wounded,” but has not changed its intentions.

The chief of staff also said that commissioning INS Drakon into the Navy will increase the fleet’s readiness and enable it to operate more covertly, at greater distances and depths, and with greater striking power. He called Israel’s recent military achievements unprecedented, mentioning operations against senior figures, strengthened defense readiness, deterrence and expanded operational capabilities.

President Herzog’s assessment

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said that INS Drakon opens a new chapter in the development of the Israeli Navy. He noted that this submarine and additional submarines expected to enter service later will strengthen the fleet’s operational capabilities and provide the country with significant capabilities to act, including thousands of kilometers from its borders.

Herzog said that over the past two years, Israeli sailors and other project participants had worked at the port of Kiel in Germany. He thanked representatives of the German government and Thyssenkrupp for their role in bringing the submarine into service.

Memory of the Dakar crew

The president separately mentioned the 69 crew members of the INS Dakar submarine, which disappeared in 1968. He addressed the INS Drakon crew, emphasizing that the decisive factor remains the person who operates even the most advanced technology.
