The Israel Defense Forces have reduced the size of their grouping in southern Lebanon from eight to six brigades. The Jerusalem Post reported this, citing Army Radio.

Which units were withdrawn

According to Army Radio, the Israeli military recently withdrew four brigades from Lebanon, replacing them with two. A significant number of reservists were also released.

The commando brigade, the Golani Brigade, and two reserve brigades — the 55th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade and the 4th Reserve Armored Brigade — left Lebanon.

New forces and the purpose of the reduction

In turn, the 188th Armored Brigade and the Ground Forces Training School Brigade entered Lebanon. According to Army Radio, these units took up positions in Lebanon.

A military source told the radio station that the reduction in forces is intended to ease the burden on Israel Defense Forces personnel and, in particular, allow reservists to return home when conditions permit.

Statement by a former commander

Earlier this month, Reserve Colonel Oren Zini, the former commander of the Tze'elim training base, warned in an interview with 103FM against any future agreement that would oblige Israeli forces to leave positions in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon before completing their missions. According to him, without holding these areas, the enemy will be able to leave them with its forces and ammunition.
