President Trump rejects US-China cooperation on AI — Al Jazeera English
US President Donald Trump said that the United States would not cooperate with China in the field of artificial intelligence and would not slow the development of this technology. Al Jazeera English reports.
Answering journalists’ questions before departing the White House, Trump said that the United States did not intend to slow AI development. He made the statement amid calls from US lawmakers and executives of major technology companies to slow the technology’s development because of potential risks to humanity.
Position on China
Trump said that the United States is ahead of China in artificial intelligence and must maintain this advantage. He compared concerns about AI to issues he had previously called hoaxes, including climate change and the investigation into possible collusion between his 2016 election campaign and Russian operatives.
After a three-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the US president also rejected the idea of combining the two countries’ efforts in developing the technology. According to Trump, the leaders did not spend much time discussing artificial intelligence.

Communication channel for incidents
On Friday, the White House said that the United States and China had agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel regarding incidents related to artificial intelligence. Beijing did not immediately comment on the statement.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in his latest address to the General Assembly, called on world leaders to introduce safeguards for AI. He warned that uncontrolled development of the technology without accountability could pose a risk to the world.
Trump also announced that his administration would use the term “superintelligence” instead of artificial intelligence in official communications. China’s Foreign Ministry said that all parties could strengthen exchanges, hold in-depth discussions on the current situation, and seek consensus. Xi Jinping had previously stressed that AI development must take place under human control.
