Israel has destroyed strategic bridges in southern Lebanon to cut off the region — Reuters
On Sunday, the Israeli Air Force launched a series of heavy strikes on the main bridge connecting southern Lebanon with the rest of the country.
The attack came after the Israeli military command issued an official order to destroy all crossings over the Litani River, effectively cutting off the south of the country from the central regions.
According to Reuters, Sunday’s airstrike significantly damaged a section of the coastal highway.
This route runs through important agricultural land and is one of the key transportation arteries providing logistical links between the south and Beirut.
An Israeli military spokesperson had warned in advance of the planned attack on the bridge, citing the need to disrupt supply lines for militant groups.
However, by that evening, Lebanese state media confirmed a second strike on the same target to render it permanently inoperable.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun sharply criticized the actions of the neighboring state, calling the destruction of infrastructure an extremely threatening signal.
In his view, such strikes are a “harbinger of a ground invasion” and clearly indicate preparations for a large-scale ground operation on Lebanese territory.
The Lebanese head of state also emphasized that the systematic destruction of transportation routes constitutes a “policy of collective punishment of the civilian population.”
This creates critical obstacles to the movement of civilians and significantly complicates the delivery of humanitarian aid, medicine, and food to affected areas.
The situation around the Litani River is strategically important, as this waterway is often viewed as a buffer zone.
The Israeli military seeks to establish full fire control over all crossings to isolate the enemy’s southern group and prepare a foothold for further maneuvers.
It is worth noting that the U.S. and Israel have different objectives in the war with Iran.
Israel also bombed a port from which Iran was supplying weapons to Russia.
