Kaja Kallas: a hasty peace for Ukraine could be dangerous
European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas warned that rapid peace agreements promoted by Donald Trump’s team could threaten Ukraine’s security and sovereignty.
According to Kallas, rushing negotiations gives the aggressor an opportunity to dictate terms, and agreements concluded under pressure risk being weak and unfavorable for Kyiv.
She emphasized that instead of a quick peace, Ukraine needs support to negotiate from a position of strength. Any peace plan must be fair, comprehensive, include real guarantees and obligations for Russia, and require the mandatory participation of Ukraine and Europe in its formation and signing.
Kallas also reminded of Russia’s historically aggressive policies, noting that over the past 100 years it has attacked 19 different countries, including Ukraine.
American officials have warned NATO allies that they will pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to sign a peace agreement with Russia as quickly as possible. Otherwise, Ukraine will face “significantly worse terms.”
U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed a new special representative responsible for promoting his “peace plan” to end the war in Ukraine. The position has gone to Dan Driscoll.
Former U.S. Secretary of State and prominent political figure Hillary Clinton called the peace plan proposed by the United States for ending the war with Russia an effective capitulation of Ukraine.
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance named three key requirements that any peace plan to end the war in Ukraine must include.
