Kaya Callas was surprised by Israel's statements about severing ties
The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, said she was surprised by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar’s announcement that he was cutting off contact with her.
Kallas noted that she had been engaged in regular dialogue with the Israeli side, which was often difficult but, in her view, remained constructive.
She emphasized that she had conveyed the EU’s position both at ministerial meetings and directly to Israeli leadership, and had also participated in shaping a common European position.
“After all, we simply cannot support what the Israeli government is doing right now. I had to be the one to convey these messages—both from the meeting of foreign ministers to the European Commission, which must take appropriate measures, and to the Israeli minister… I have always considered these discussions constructive. Sometimes they took place almost daily, but the Israeli minister’s statement really came as a surprise,” she said.
Commenting on reports that she allegedly compared Israel to apartheid, Kallas stated that she does not see the need to constantly confirm or deny closed-door diplomatic conversations.
“If we start arguing about what was or wasn’t said behind closed doors, I’d be spending every day constantly refuting or confirming these things,” she said.
Kallas also emphasized that the European Union’s position remains unchanged—support for the two-state solution as the only realistic path to peace.
She added that the violence in the West Bank and the situation in Gaza complicate the achievement of this solution and warrant condemnation by the EU.
Kallas made these remarks in an interview with ER.
The day before, the European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, responded to a statement by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announcing the severing of all contacts with her.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced the severing of contacts with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.
Earlier, Israeli authorities officially stated that the country does not plan to withdraw its troops from territories in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Syria, despite the agreements reached the day before between the U.S. and Iran.
