Michael Bush, the Labour Party’s candidate for governor of Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom State, visited former Governor Victor Attah and offered his condolences over the death of Attah’s younger brother, Etim Attah. The meeting took place during the funeral at the former governor’s residence in Ikot Akpa Ndua, in the Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.

Bush arrived at the ceremony together with his deputy governorship candidate, Salome Ignatius Matthew, and supporters. In published photographs, he shakes hands with Attah. Also present was the former governor’s son-in-law, former state Commissioner for Works Udoma Ekarika.

Preparation for the election

According to Premium Times Nigeria, the visit came as political parties and candidates prepare for the 2027 governorship election in Akwa Ibom. Bush said that Attah remains an important figure in state politics whom serious candidates turn to for experience.

At the same time, Bush did not say that the former governor had endorsed his candidacy. He became the Labour Party’s candidate after winning the party’s primaries in May 2026. Previously, Bush was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party and worked as an aide to former Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Victor Attah’s role

Victor Attah led Akwa Ibom State from 1999 to 2006. His tenure is associated with the development of Akwa Ibom State University and the current Victor Attah International Airport, named after him.

Although Attah has stepped away from party politics, state politicians continue to turn to him. In January 2022, he was among the participants in a meeting where Udom Emmanuel presented Umo Eno as his preferred successor, and later Attah introduced Eno to representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party.

A few days before the visit, Bush also called for an assessment of Akwa Ibom’s development over the 39 years since the state was created. In a video address, he promised that if elected governor, he would free the state from political patronage.
