Possible further actions

Against the backdrop of suspended negotiations, US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of resuming large-scale combat operations against Iran. The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, reported that the Pentagon is preparing to deploy a third carrier strike group and additional US Marine Corps ships to the Middle East. The total number of forces involved could reach up to 10,000 troops, with their arrival expected by the end of November.

Trump previously stated that he could resume strikes on Iran after the midterm elections in early November if no agreement is reached. At the same time, Riyadh is urging Washington to join airstrikes against the Houthis ahead of a planned offensive in Yemen. The Houthis are a rebel group that has been fighting Yemen’s government forces since 2014. According to officials, Trump was reluctant about US participation in such strikes, but may change his position.
