German Chancellor Merz says Jews are in danger in the country — Jerusalem Post

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, following his party’s defeat by the Left Party in Berlin state elections, said that Jewish life in the country is no longer safe. As the Jerusalem Post reports, he called this the most serious burden of recent years at a press conference.

“The fact that Jewish life in Germany is no longer safe is the most serious burden of recent years,” Merz said.

Accusations against the Left Party

The Left Party has previously been repeatedly accused of antisemitism. In particular, in August, a rapper performed at one of its campaign events and chanted “Death to the Israel Defense Forces” and “Yalla, yalla, intifada.”

Elif Eralp’s position

Left Party leader Elif Eralp denied the accusations of antisemitism. She stated that “celebrating violence and terrorism is absolutely unacceptable” and promised to do everything possible to ensure that Jews, Muslims, queer people, and all city residents can feel safe.

In June, the independent German antisemitism monitoring network RIAS reported that the number of antisemitic incidents in the country had reached a record level since monitoring began in 2025. The network recorded 8,725 such cases.
