Kuwait’s Court of Cassation sentences former lawmakers to prison
Kuwait’s Court of Cassation has handed down sentences to several former lawmakers of the dissolved National Assembly. The court also overturned acquittals for 15 defendants, most of whom were former parliamentarians, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.
The report notes that the charges concerned challenging the rights and powers of the country’s emir and disseminating news that, according to the wording of the case, harms the state’s internal interests and stability.
Sentences for former lawmakers
The First Chamber of the Court of Cassation overturned an appellate court ruling that had suspended the sentence of former lawmaker Muhannad Talal Al-Sayer and sentenced him to three years in prison. He was charged with challenging the emir’s rights, interfering in his powers, and disseminating news harmful to Kuwait’s internal interests and stability.
Former lawmaker Saleh Mohammed Al-Mulla was sentenced to two years in prison after the court overturned the appellate ruling that had suspended his sentence. He was convicted of challenging the emir’s rights and powers.

The court also overturned acquittals of former parliamentarians Musallam Al-Barrak and Salem Al-Namlan. They were found to be repeat offenders and sentenced to three years in prison for disseminating news that, according to the court’s conclusion, harms the country’s interests.
Other court decisions
Former lawmaker Bader Al-Dahoum was sentenced to one year of forced labor for insulting judges of the Constitutional Court. Another 15 defendants were found guilty of disseminating news that, according to the wording of the case, harms the interests of the state, but the court refrained from imposing penalties on them.
Those affected by these rulings included former lawmakers Adel Al-Damkhi, Mohammed Mousaed Al-Dosari, Osama Al-Zaid, Shuaib Ali Shaban, Mohammed Abbas Jawhar Hayat, Madi Al-Hajri, Falah Al-Hajri, Hamad Al-Mudlej, Ali Radan Al-Otaibi, Mohammed Haif, Saud Al-Hajri, Khaled Munees Al-Otaibi, Nasser Mohammed Al-Mutairi, and Nami Harab Mohammed Awad Obaid.
