Qatar calls for phased de-escalation in the US-Iran war
Qatar advocates a phased winding down of the current crisis in the war between the United States and Iran in order to create conditions for comprehensive regional dialogue and a sustainable political settlement. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said this in an interview with CNN, Anadolu Agency reports.
According to al-Ansari, Doha does not consider a simple temporary cessation of hostilities sufficient. He warned that freezing the conflict could lead to a new escalation in several months. The spokesperson stressed that sustainable settlement requires creating conditions for proper negotiations and addressing underlying regional problems.
Qatar's priorities
Al-Ansari named two immediate tasks. The first is to ensure that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and ease economic pressure on the region's population, including Iran's residents. The second is to prevent further military escalation in the region, including attacks affecting Gulf states and Iran.

After tensions decrease, countries in the region should jointly promote comprehensive dialogue, he said. Such dialogue should include all regional parties, rather than only external participants.
Negotiations and the strait
The Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that political will and technical issues remain the main obstacles to reaching an agreement. He added that Qatar is developing proposals aimed at resolving both problems.
Al-Ansari also expressed the view that sanctions have not produced the expected diplomatic results and that the situation can only be resolved through an agreement at the negotiating table. He warned against normalizing the closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the war, as this could cause energy, food and economic shocks beyond the region. The spokesperson called for responsibility and compliance with international law.
