Cape Coast prepares for the Oguaa Fetu Afahye festival
In the Ghanaian city of Cape Coast, streets were filled with thousands of visitors, traders and artisans ahead of the main events of the Oguaa Fetu Afahye festival. The theme of the 2026 celebration is “Heritage, Resilience and Prosperity.” MyJoyOnline reports.
A major ceremony of chiefs in traditional attire is scheduled for Saturday, with the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, expected to attend. The programme for the same day includes public thanksgiving rites, youth dance competitions, concerts and nighttime events.
Trade and temporary establishments
Numerous temporary pubs, food establishments and retail outlets have opened in central areas of Cape Coast. According to estimates by the Ghana News Agency, about 50 food establishments and pubs are operating on the stretch between the Pedu Roundabout and the Adisadel South Gate.

Demand for services has also increased in hotels, transport and among local artisans. Managers of hotels and guesthouses told the Ghana News Agency that rooms were booked in advance and establishments are operating at full capacity. Transport operators ran additional trips due to the influx of passengers, while craftsmen built temporary stages, lighting, decorative arches and trading structures.
Fair and cultural programme
The Central Region Trade and Investment Fair at the Adisadel School Park has become part of the festival events. It features shea products, textiles, processed food products and handicrafts. On Friday, the programme includes street parades, drumming processions, masquerade performances, business forums, exhibition panels and evening concerts.
Oguaa Fetu Afahye is a centuries-old festival of the Oguaa people of Cape Coast, dedicated to thanksgiving, purification and the renewal of community ties. It combines religious rites at traditional shrines, chiefs’ processions and mass celebrations. Festival events are scheduled from Thursday through Sunday.
