Kenneth Quinn Urges China and US to Cooperate to Overcome Hunger — ECNS

In China, World Food Prize Foundation Honorary President Kenneth Quinn recalled meetings with Chinese plant breeder Yuan Longping and expressed the view that agricultural cooperation between China and the United States should be based on the shared goal of overcoming hunger. In an interview with News Lounge China News Network, he said that such cooperation should place the common cause above commercial interests and disputes. This was reported by ECNS.

Award presentation in Des Moines

Quinn said that in 2004, Yuan Longping visited Des Moines, Iowa. Quinn hosted the award ceremony during which Norman Borlaug presented Yuan with a World Food Prize sculpture.

The report calls Borlaug the “father of the Green Revolution” and Yuan Longping the “father of hybrid rice.” According to Quinn, both scientists were humble and down-to-earth people.

Photo on a postage stamp

After Yuan Longping's death, a photograph featuring him, Quinn and Borlaug appeared on a Chinese postage stamp. Quinn called this evidence of the place the plant breeder held in people's hearts.

In Quinn's view, China and the United States can follow the example of these scientists by placing a common goal above commercial interests and disputes. He linked agricultural cooperation between the two countries to their shared aspiration to end hunger.
