Head of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s security attended White House banquet — South China Morning Post

Zhou Hongxu, the head of security for Chinese President Xi Jinping, attended a state banquet at the White House in the United States. The guest list identified him as director of the Central Guard Bureau and deputy director of the General Office of the Communist Party of China, South China Morning Post reports.

Zhou Hongxu’s positions and career

The 55-year-old major general of the People’s Liberation Army of China, Zhou Hongxu, accompanied Xi Jinping at major international events, including the G20 summit in Bali in 2022 and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in San Francisco in 2023.

According to his official biography, Zhou was born in Chongqing and earned a master’s degree from a PLA artillery academy. He previously commanded an artillery regiment of the 40th Division of the 14th Army Group, headed the military training department of the former Chengdu Military Region, and served as deputy chief of staff of the Northern Theater Command’s ground forces.

Also present at the banquet was 63-year-old Tang Fangyu, director of the Central Policy Research Office of the Communist Party of China. He took over the body in January, replacing Jiang Jinquan, who had led it since 2020. Tang frequently accompanied Xi Jinping on trips across China and abroad after being appointed chief policy adviser.

Other guests included political secretary of the Chinese president’s office Lu Luhua, Assistant Foreign Minister and chief of protocol Hong Lei, assistant to the foreign minister and director of the Department of North American and Oceanian Affairs Cai Wei, as well as Foreign Ministry Information Department director Mao Ning. Hong Lei has led protocol affairs since 2019 and has served as an assistant minister since 2024.
