PTI postpones march on Islamabad until October 4 — Dawn

In Pakistan, the PTI party decided to postpone its march on Islamabad, planned for September 27, by more than a week. According to an unnamed senior party representative, march participants are to set out from Peshawar for the capital on October 4.

As Dawn reports, PTI had been preparing a nationwide protest and march on Islamabad demanding the release of the party’s founder, Imran Khan. According to the publication, he is being held at Adiala prison in Rawalpindi.

New date for the march

A PTI representative said that the announcement of the postponement is expected to be made soon by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.

He also said that the decision to postpone the march was not connected to an action by the Jamaat-e-Islami party, which postponed its own protest against a levy on petroleum products at the prime minister’s request. According to the source, PTI is capable of organizing the march independently.

The party representative claimed that federal authorities had already blocked roads leading to the capital and were spending significant funds on law enforcement officers. He said that the party had already achieved what it sought to accomplish through the march.

Restrictions and preparations

Preparations to ensure security and respond to possible emergencies are continuing in the Rawalpindi division and the federal capital territory amid expected protests. In Islamabad, restrictions under Article 144 have been imposed for two months, while the local administration warned residents against participating in illegal activities.

The same restrictions were separately imposed across Punjab province for 13 days due to threats to public order. The Punjab government asked federal authorities to deploy Rangers in the districts of Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, and Mianwali from September 22 to October 5 to assist police in maintaining order.
