Death toll after vessel sinking in Indonesia rises to 42 — Anadolu Agency

In Indonesia’s Java Sea, the death toll after the sinking of the KM Virgo Transport 8 vessel has risen to 42. Search-and-rescue teams recovered another 14 bodies during diving operations inside the sunken vessel.

Search and evacuation of bodies

As Anadolu Agency reports, citing the state-run Antara agency, all 14 bodies were recovered by divers from a special team of the National Search and Rescue Agency Basarnas, the Indonesian Navy and other rescue units.

The bodies were first transported to the KN SAR Pacitan search-and-rescue vessel for urgent procedures and then flown by helicopter to Banjarmasin. The Basarnas HR-3604 helicopter and an Indonesian Navy Panther helicopter were used for the transportation. Upon arrival, the bodies were handed over to the disaster victim identification team and relevant authorities for medical identification and further procedures.

Passenger information

As of Thursday, rescuers had found 150 people from the vessel’s passenger list. Of them, 108 survived, while the deaths of 42 people have been confirmed. Another 93 people are considered missing, and the search-and-rescue operation continues.
