Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, stated that the U.S. decision to scale back the Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises with South Korea has put Seoul in a difficult position. She called these maneuvers “war games.”
According to the Korea Herald, South Korea and the U.S. scaled back their annual summer joint exercises after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a reduction in their scope. Kim Yo-jong said the order came as a surprise.

She also criticized statements by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, calling them “hypocritical.” She was referring to his remarks about respecting the decision to scale back the exercises while simultaneously expressing his intention to independently build up the country’s military capabilities.
Kim Yo-jong called the reduction in maneuvers unprecedented in the history of joint U.S.-South Korea exercises. According to her, the scale of the exercises was reduced after they had already begun and without prior discussion. She also stated that U.S. security assistance is no longer free of charge and accused the South Korean government of being dependent on the United States.
