Cyprus, Greece, Malta and Italy sign shipping declaration
Cyprus, Greece, Malta and Italy signed a joint declaration in Limassol to strengthen coordination on European shipping. According to Cyprus Mail, the countries seek to have greater influence on decisions concerning the industry’s competitiveness and decarbonisation, which are made in Brussels and at the International Maritime Organization.
Meeting in the 3+1 format
The agreements were reached during the ninth maritime meeting of Cyprus, Greece and Malta. This time, the event was held for the first time in an expanded 3+1 format with Italy’s participation. The four Mediterranean countries have significant interests in shipping within the European Union.
The meeting participants at the Parklane hotel in Limassol were hosted by Cyprus’ Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hadjimanolis. Greece’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vasilis Kikilias and Malta’s Minister for Sustainable Mobility Chris Bonett took part in the event.

Italy’s participation
Italy’s Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi joined the meeting online. Italy was represented in Limassol by Ambassador Antonella Cavallari, who has held the post since January 2026.
After the meeting, Hadjimanolis said that the declaration reflected the participants’ shared concerns about the future and competitiveness of European shipping, as well as the challenges of decarbonising the industry.
