China allows foreigners to register residence online — South China Morning Post

In China, foreign visitors staying outside hotels can now register their place of residence online without visiting a police station. This applies to tourists and other foreigners who choose alternative accommodation options.

Registration within 24 hours

As South China Morning Post reports, China’s Exit and Entry Administration Law requires foreigners to register their place of residence with the police within 24 hours of arrival. The requirement applies both to those arriving in China and to foreigners moving from one region of the country to another.

Possible sanctions

Failure to register may result in a warning or a fine of up to 2,000 yuan, which is about US$298. Analysts cited by the publication believe that the option to complete registration online will make travel in China more convenient for foreign visitors.
