China resells Russian gas at prices several times higher than purchase costs

China has started reselling Russian gas at prices two to three times higher than its purchase price, according to Reuters. In March, the country shipped eight to ten liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargos, marking a record high in historical observations.

Since the beginning of the year, China has resold a record 1.31 million tonnes of LNG, comprising 19 shipments—10 to South Korea, five to Thailand, and the others to Japan, India, and the Philippines. For comparison, China resold only 0.82 million tonnes in 2025 and 0.98 million tonnes in 2023.

At the same time, Russian pipeline gas exports to Europe rose by 22% year-on-year in March amid the Middle East crisis, Reuters reports.

This development highlights China's increasingly pivotal role as an intermediary in the global gas market and the growing demand in the Asia-Pacific region.

These trends may influence energy pricing and the future allocation of gas flows on the international market.
