China to raise visa fees for Japanese citizens about sevenfold

China will raise visa fees for Japanese citizens by about seven times. As The Japan Times reports, the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo announced that the new rates will apply to applications submitted from Monday.

New rates

The cost of a single-entry visa for Japanese citizens will rise from 2,250 to 16,750 yen. The fee for a double-entry visa will increase from 3,750 to 25,100 yen.

The decision was made after Japan introduced higher visa fees for foreign nationals in July.

Principle of reciprocity

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a press conference on Friday that the rate change was made in accordance with the principle of reciprocity.

In November 2024, Chinese authorities restored a short-term visa-free regime for Japanese citizens. Japanese nationals may stay in China without a visa for up to 30 days for tourism purposes.
