China has criticized Germany over lawmakers' visit to Taiwan
Beijing has criticized Germany after a group of German lawmakers visited Taiwan. Chinese officials stated that such trips are politically sensitive and could affect bilateral relations between the two countries.
This was stated by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, as quoted by dpa.
The spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed opposition to official contacts between Taiwan and countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Beijing.
She emphasized that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. According to her, the “One China principle” constitutes the “political foundation” of Sino-German relations.
"We call on the relevant parties on the German side to adhere to the 'One China' principle and stop sending the wrong signals to forces advocating for Taiwan’s independence," Mao Ning said.
A German cross-party parliamentary delegation led by Green Party MP Till Steffen arrived in Taiwan last weekend. The purpose of the trip is to expand cooperation with the island.
On Tuesday, the delegation is scheduled to meet with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing considers a separatist.
