China proposes new measures to enhance engagement with Taiwan
On 12 April, Beijing announced ten new measures aimed at boosting exchanges with Taiwan following a visit by the opposition party leader from the island, Kuomintang's Zheng Liwen.
Among the initiatives are the easing of tourism restrictions, allowing Taiwanese TV dramas and animations into the mainland market, youth group exchanges, and simplifying sales of food products and fish.
Additionally, mainland China has announced the full restoration of air routes between the two sides, including flights from Urumqi, Xi’an, Harbin, Kunming, and Lanzhou. Shanghai and Fujian residents will be allowed to visit Taiwan as part of individual tours.
Beijing has also pledged to support the development of water, electricity, and gas supply as well as the construction of bridges between the coastal islands of Fujian Province and the islands of Kinmen and Matsu.
These measures indicate China’s intent to improve relations and economic ties with Taiwan, which is significant for regional stability and development.
It is expected that renewed close contacts could reduce tensions and stimulate joint projects in the near future.
