Ghana parliamentary committee urges enforcement of sanitation rules — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana, the parliamentary committee on sanitation and water resources has called on metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to ensure enforcement of local sanitation bylaws. This is intended to help curb widespread indiscriminate waste disposal, MyJoyOnline reports.
Enforcement of sanitation rules
Committee chair John Oti Bless said that the mere existence of sanitation regulations is not enough. According to him, local authorities must apply these rules in practice and hold violators accountable.
Oti Bless called indiscriminate waste disposal one of the main problems in Ghana's sanitation sector. He also noted that residents' lack of discipline remains a significant obstacle to improving the country's sanitation situation and urged people to take greater responsibility for the cleanliness of their communities.

Nationwide monitoring
The statement was made during nationwide monitoring conducted by the committee to assess sanitation conditions and waste management practices in the country. The committee chair cited Rwanda as an example of a state that has made significant progress in sanitation through strict rules and their enforcement.
The committee also called on the media to intensify educational work on responsible waste handling and maintaining cleanliness in communities. The committee believes that sustained public awareness efforts and stricter enforcement of rules by local authorities are needed to overcome persistent sanitation problems.
