Congressman Eric Swalwell Resigns Over Sex Scandal — CNN
U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, a Democrat, has officially announced his intention to resign from Congress.
CNN reports this.
The politician made this decision amid widespread publicity regarding his controversial sexual misconduct and an announced congressional ethics investigation.
The scandal came to light last week following allegations by a former staffer in the congressman’s office.
The woman said that after an evening of drinking, Swalwell had sexual relations with her, although due to her intoxication, she “could not give informed consent.”
Subsequently, three more women came forward with similar allegations, describing other inappropriate incidents.
In particular, it was alleged that the politician “sent inappropriate nude photos and graphic messages,” which sparked a wave of outrage among his colleagues and constituents.
Eric Swalwell himself categorically denies the claim that the incident with his former colleague amounted to rape. At the same time, he publicly admitted his own guilt in other incidents, noting that he “must take responsibility for past mistakes.”
In his statement, the congressman emphasized that he believes it is wrong to be removed from office without due legal process.
However, he added: “It is also wrong to the people of my district… for my attention to be focused on my congressional duties right now.”
Due to the rapid turn of events and public pressure, Swalwell has already had to radically change his political plans.
In particular, he “had to abandon his plans to run for governor of California,” which effectively puts an end to his future career.
At this time, the politician has not specified the exact date of his official resignation from Congress. However, it is expected that “a special election to fill the vacant seat… may take place this summer” so that the district is not left without representation.
